Mrs. Marian Cheryl Priyanthi Cooray – Headmaster, Springfield College Colombo
Mrs. Marian Cheryl Priyanthi Cooray entered the University of Colombo in 1973 and read for a
Special Degree in Zoology with Chemistry as a subsidiary subject in 1977. She began her Primary
education at Sacred Heart Convent Galle and continued at Good Shepherd Convents Kandy and
Kotahena. In 1965 she moved to Colombo and joined the middle school of St. Bridget’s
Convent, Colombo 07. To pursue Science education in the Sinhala medium, she moved to grade
nine of Devi Balika Vidyalaya and entered the Science Faculty of the University of Colombo in
February 1973. She graduated in August 1977 and worked as a Demonstrator in Zoology for one
academic year, after which she took a break of six years to spend time with her family.
In October 1984 she joined Bishops College, Colombo as a substitute teacher for a friend who
was travelling overseas. This was a life changing experience for her as she was offered a
permanent post as an Advanced level Zoology teacher. She taught Science and Health science
in the middle school and was the Interact advisor for fifteen years. After eighteen years service
she was appointed the Vice Principal in 2002, a post she held till her retirement in December

She joined Gateway College Rajagiriya as a Deputy Principal (Pastoral Care) in June 2014, and
she taught Biology and Human Biology for IGCSE’s and Biology for Advanced Level (Edexcel).
She was offered the post of Principal, Springfield College by the Chairman Dr. Harsha Alles and
she accepted the responsibilities from the 1 st of June, 2017.
In her capacity as Principal of Springfield College which is a new school established in January
2017 she hopes to uplift the academic standards and work on improving facilities for
extracurricular and co-curricular activities to enable holistic development of the students.
She hopes that students acquire the necessary skills to face the challenges that lie ahead and
leave school as confident smart individuals who will be an asset to their motherland. With her
thirty three years experience in the field of teaching, she is convinced of the fact that
professional development and empowerment of teachers is a prerequisite for what she hopes
to achieve and will encourage them wholeheartedly to equip themselves further and go that
extra mile for the students in their care.
